  • Classical Ballet

balletclass ”Flight performed by the soul”' A. Pushkin -of his contemporary ballerina A.I. Istomina in Eugene Onegin.

Ballet is best known for its unique features and techniques. Graceful and flowing, but at the same time precise movements create the magnificent beauty of ballet. Ballet styles include Classical, Neoclassical, and Contemporary. There are several approaches of training in classical ballet. The most common are Vaganova method (Russian), Cecchetti Method (Italian), Royal Method (English), and Ballanchine Method (American). Russia has a recognized tradition of ballet and Russian ballet has had great importance in its country throughout history. At Nika Ballet Studio, the Vaganova method is implemented. Students of classical ballet have an opportunity to learn from immense knowledge and expertise that the school’s Artistic Director, Anna Fateeva, gained through the teachings of great ballet masters at the Bolshoi as well as throughout her career as a principal dancer with the Moscow Classical Ballet, and with various dance companies in the United States.

In the classical ballet classes at Nika Ballet Studio, great emphasis is placed on the method and execution of the routine, but at the same time each student’s unique personality and ability is considered. Young dancers receive a rigorous education in classical ballet technique. Students are required to learn the names, meanings, and precise technique of each movement they learn. Emphasis is put on building strength mostly in the lower body, particularly the legs, and the core, as a strong core is necessary for many movements in ballet, especially turns, and on developing flexibility and strong feet for dancing en pointe. Classes are designed to work on control of the body to develop the correct technique for the future. In all our ballet classes from pre-ballet through advanced variation workshops, strict discipline, strength, flexibility, diligence, precision, and endurance, as well as artistic expression, are emphasized.

At Nika Ballet Studio, young dancers learn more than technique perfected by great ballet masters of Russian ballet tradition, more than the art of creative expression…they grow within themselves the passion that enables the flight of the soul.

  • Modern Dance

mod20dance207 Modern dance as a term usually refers to 20th century concert dance, born out of a rebellion against classical ballet and emphasizes the creative process in both choreography and performance. By the late 20th century distinctions among modern dance, ballet, and show dancing were not as rigid as they once had been. Ballet technique and choreography have remained more formal than those of modern dance, but their themes and stage effects are often similar. Modern Dance has now been categorized further. In Europe in particular, early modern dance or free movement dance is now classified as Dancer. The choreography seen in performance is very diverse and generally can not be recognized as any specific dance style, although other dance styles can often influence much of the movement.

The term Modern Dance as applied at Nika Ballet Studio, is typified as being a style of theatrical dance seen in contemporary performances across the United States. With a classical ballet influence, in its purest technical sense, the movement generally includes the dynamic highlights and tricks of jazz dance, with isolations, kicks and leaps. Rather than emphasizing technique per se, which is seen more as a tool for the dancer and a means by which to strengthen the body, increase flexibility, and through a deliberate exposure of the contemporary dancer to a wide range of techniques to ensure versatility, the Modern Dance class concentrates on the choreographic and performing process.

Modern Dance classes at Nika Ballet Studio not only offer great cardio-vascular exercise but present a superior way to tone and strengthen muscles, heighten self-confidence and self-esteem, promote emotional development, improve social skills, and encourage intellectual growth. Further, the social component present in participation in dance classes is of utmost importance to character development. Children and teens who are part of a dance group have more than an opportunity to develop strong social ties, which contribute to enhance self-esteem and a positive outlook on social interaction. Group choreography fosters teamwork, communication, and trust. In addition, learning the language of the body and being able to integrate one’s own movement to respond appropriately, is a crucial element in development of social effectiveness. Shortly after joining a Modern Dance class most children quickly gain a profound understanding of the necessity of cooperation with their classmates, which leads to development of social skills that prove to be invaluable later in all aspects of life.

  • Pilates

pilatesPilates Method is a fitness system, which is distilled from the study of yoga, dance, martial arts & rehabilitation techniques. The basics were developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, who called his method Contrology because he believed that the mind can be used to control the muscles.Pilates is a safe and sensible exercise system, focused on improving flexibility, strength and balance. The central element of Pilates is to create a fusion of the mind and the body, making the most of its strengths, counteracting its weaknesses, and correcting its imbalances. With the goal of producing a union of mind and body, the method requires that one constantly pays attention to one's body while doing the movements. Instead of doing many repetitions of each exercise, Pilates preferred fewer, more precise and effective movements, which are low impact and easy to perform using floor mats, fit balls, and resistance bands. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, coordination-both muscular and mental, are key components of our effective Pilates program.

With systematic practice of specific exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable as a fitness endeavor. Widely embraced by dancers for years, Pilates is gaining increasing popularity among people of all ages and fitness levels across the country.

With regular attendance, Pilates trainees can expect to lose weight and tone muscle mass. Those engaged in our Pilates program also gain increased lung capacity, improved posture, balance, joint health, and core strength. Pilates method leads to a decreased impact of stress on the body and provides a foundation for a positive body awareness. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capability converts to amplified control over other areas of one's life.
